Karma-yoga (स्वधर्मयोग)

  • DEFINITION— The word "Karma" has been derived from the samskrita root (dhatu) 'डुकृञ् करणे / कृ (dukr-jn-karaNE / kr)' which means 'to do'. The word yoga is derived from the samskrita root ' युजिर् योगे / युज समाधौ सम्पर्चने संयमने ' which means 'to unite with / (सम् आधीयते अस्मिन् मनो जनैः इति) perfect absorption of thought into the one object of meditation, i.e. the supreme spirit, union or connection, restraining'. So, "Karmayoga" means deeply absorbed in whatever we do, usully leading to perfect results. If we are not fully involved, we can't get full success in anything. So, it can also be told with full devotion (bhakti yoga) or with complete or actual knowledge of what we are doing (jnaana yoga). "समत्वं योग उच्यते", "योगः कर्मसु कौशलम्", "चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधो योगः" (explanation). "Yoga" also means a system or method. e.g., dhyaana yoga, japa yoga, ashtaanga yoga, kriyaa yoga, bhaava yoga etc. So, "A system wherein karma is considered with great significance also can be called as Karmayoga". Also it means doing without expecting a desired result just for the sake of duty. 
  • CLASSIFICATION— (1) निष्कामकर्मयोग (~द्वैत), (2) भगवदर्पितकर्मयोग (~विशिष्टाद्वैत), (3) अकर्तृत्वकर्मयोग / ज्ञानयोग (~अद्वैत).

कर्म— प्राकृत (श्वास, भोजन, yawning, sleep…), स्वकृत (बुद्धिपूर्क, धर्माधर्म)

कर्म / सत्कर्म (to be done- vedokta and loukika), विकर्म / दुष्कर्म (not to be done), अकर्म (not doing anything).

सत्कर्म— लौकिक (स्वार्थफल), वैदिक (स्वार्थफल), पारमार्थिक (अधिधर्म, निस्वार्थ, लोकसङ्ग्रहार्थ)

लौकिक— नीति-सदाचार, विद्या, स्नेह

वैदिक— संस्कार, साधन (यज्ञ, दान, तपस्)— ऐहिकामुष्मिकसद्गति, दुरितक्षय, स्वात्मशुद्धि

पारमार्थिक— ब्रह्मानुभूति, शान्ति, मोक्ष

स्वधर्मयोग— 1) prakriti helps, easy in doing
2) fast progress and more friutful
3) लोकोपयोगाधिक्य
4) a better development of atleast a few meritoriuos qualities and skills present in one individual if in swadharma, or else if he changes may lose previous shakti saamarthyas, no surity of gaining new ones. So, swadharma causes swa bala pushti without saankarya shankaa.





कर्मफल—सञ्चित, प्रारब्ध, आगामि

BHAKTI-YOGA

DEFINITION— पराभक्तिस्वरूपम् 

सा त्वस्मिन्  पर(म)प्रेमरूपा (नारदभक्तिसूत्र 1) 

-easier in Kaliyuga
-without any लौकिकप्रतिफलापेक्षा, परन्तु निरपेक्षा
-without any fear, दैवीप्रेम is not like लौकिकप्रणय
-असूयारहिता, no jealousy in real devotees regarding others' spiritual progress

अमृतस्वरूपा च (3)

Gives immortality, moksha, devoid of rebirth, desirable like amrita or nectar, can give absolute peace and bliss, आत्मानन्द, आत्मतृप्ति, आत्मरति…

CHARACTERISTICS (लक्षणानि)—

यल्लब्ध्वा पुमान् सिद्धो भवति, अमृतो भवति, तृप्तो भवति (4)

-Can be gained only by his grace
-a common man becomes पूर्णकामः, अवाप्तकामः, आप्तकामः, सिद्धः
-realises the actual immortal state of self
-becomes fully satisfied in life permanently with eternal peace devoid of mundane bondage (भवपाशविमुक्तः)

यत् प्राप्य न किञ्चिद् वाञ्छति, न शोचति, न द्वेष्टि, न रमते, न उत्साही भवति (5)

यज्ज्ञात्वा मत्तो भवति, स्तब्धो भवति, आत्मारामो भवति (6)

-after experiencing pure bhakti, becomes pleased, will be glad and delighted

-स्थिरप्रज्ञः, भगवति स्थितप्रज्ञः च भवति । Devoid of all dilemmas mentally like sorrow-happiness, cold-hot…

-finds bliss in one's own self

सा न कामयमाना, निरोधरूपत्वात् (7)

-bhakti can't be obtained as other material desires for all
-it controls external desires and makes the mind to focus on god along with doing our routine duties

लोक-वेदेषु तदनुकूलाचरणं तद्विरोधिषु उदासीनता (11)

भवतु निश्चयदार्ढ्यादूर्ध्वं शास्त्ररक्षणम् (12)

अन्यथा पातित्याऽऽशङ्कया (13)

लोकोऽपि तावदेव, भोजनादिव्यापारस्त्वाशरीरधारणावधि (14)

पूजादिष्वनुराग इति पाराशर्यः (16)

कथादिष्विति गर्गः (17)

आत्मरत्यविरोधेनेति शाण्डिल्यः (18)

नारदस्तु तदर्पिताखिलाचारता, तद्विस्मरणे परमव्याकुलतेति (19)

"विपद्विस्मरणं विष्णोस्सम्पन्नारायणस्मृतिः"
